BARC has developed Distress Alarm Device named as 'Nirbhaya' which can be used in case of any distress like fear of attack or medical emergency to send information to near and dear ones including police. This Compact (2.2" x 1.4" x 0.7") device weights only 45gms can be carried in pocket or purse and is paired with user's cell phone via Bluetooth link. Since the device has on board GPS chip, it can be used in conjunction with a basic mobile handset. Information about the user as well as five mobile numbers, to which information is sent, are stored in the device memory. In case of need, a switch provided on the device is pressed, the device starts sending SMS alerts to the five phone numbers via the user's cell phone. The SMS contains personal information and GPS coordinates of the device as well as Google Maps link. These five phone numbers are user selectable.

These can include phone numbers of parents, relatives, friends and police. In case Bluetooth link is broken after distress, due to snatching of the device or cell phone, the mobile application continues to send the SMS with last GPS coordinates.

When the switch is pressed, the device starts sending SMS alerts to the five phone numbers via the user's cell phone. The SMS contains personal information and GPS coordinates of the device alongwith Google map link (e.g. "I am Shubham, F/25, Blood Gr. B+Ve. Please HELP. My PRESENT location is: Latitude:19.011552N, Longitude:072.920624E, Date:19/05/2014, Time (IST):15:18:00 For location on Google Maps click on https://maps.google.com/?q=19.011552+072.920624"). Once activated, the device continues to send the message and its latest GPS location every minute to the same phone numbers. Thus if the person is being in distress, the latest location will be available. In case Bluetooth link is broken after distress, due to snatching of the device or cell phone, the mobile application continues to send the SMS with last GPS coordinates.

The device cannot be switched off, is rugged, the battery cannot be removed easily and the switch is located in such a way that it cannot be pressed accidentally. With 700mAh rechargeable Li-Ion battery, it has standby time of more than 5 days and active time of more than 12 hours. It can be charged using standard cell phone charger. Battery low and charging status indicators have been provided on the device.
