Laser Vibrometer (Kampan)

This high-resolution, non-contact optical triangulation based vibration measuring instrument (Kampan) for non-contact vibration measurement can measure vibration from a stand-off distance of 200 mm in the frequency range of 0.1 Hz to 1 kHz with an accuracy of 1% of measured frequency value and amplitude range of ±2 µm to ± 5 mm with a resolution of 1 micron.

In contact dependent techniques, the sensor e.g. accelerometer, is kept in touch with the vibrating object which may load the object and cause error in measurements. The technology offered does not need physical contact with the object thus does not affect the frequency of vibration.

Laser based vibration sensor offers distinct advantage due to its non-contact, non-destructive nature and fast speed. It can be used for on-line monitoring of vibration. It is simple in construction, low cost and portable.

Laser based vibration sensor offers distinct advantage due to its non-contact, non-destructive nature and fast speed. It can be used for on-line monitoring of vibration. It is simple in construction, low cost and portable.

Principle of Operation: Low power visible laser beam emitted from the instrument falls on the target and the backscattered light is collected by suitable optics to focus on a position sensitive detector (PSD). The position of focused spot on the detector is related to the distance of the target from the sensor. The sensor is positioned in such a way that the optical axis of the lens in the instrument is normal to the vibrating surface. As the object moves to and fro (vibrates), the focused spot on the PSD also moves. The movement of focused spot on the PSD is converted into proportional voltage by the electronic circuit of the instrument. The output voltage level of the sensor is proportional to the displacement of the target from its center position. The sensitivity of sensor is 1 mV/ µm .The voltage signal carries the information about the vibration amplitude and vibration frequency of the object . This information is extracted by feeding the signal to a PC through ADC card and using in-house developed software on PC.
