Cellulose based Water purifier for Arsenic removal
Arsenic (As) is known to be a very toxic element and a carcinogen to human. Although. WHO and USEPA have set an arsenic maximum contaminant level (MCL) for public drinking water at 10ppb, in most of the arsenic-affected Asian countries, including India, the permissible limit of arsenic in drinking water is 50 ppb. The World Health Organizations (WHO) current provisional guideline for arsenic in drinking water is 10 ppb. In India, states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhnad, West Bengal, Assam, Manipur, mainly in Ganga-Meghna-Brahmaputra (GMB) plain covering an area of about 569749 sq km with a population of over several million have reported serious illnesses due to presence of arsenic.
A unique and one of a kind cellulose based water purifier is developed via radiation induced graft polymerization process, which is simple and efficient for removal of Arsenic from drinking water at both domestic and community scale. It not only removes toxic arsenic but also other secondary toxic chemical species, such as Chromium, Fluoride, dyes, etc., from water to make it clean and safe for drinking purpose.

Applications:
- Removal of arsenic from ground/surface water to provide safe drinking water.
- It can also remove other anionic contaminants from water, Chromium, Fluoride, dyes, etc.
- Domestic and community level application
Process:Â Cellulose adsorbent based water purifier, developed by unique and environmental friendly radiation grafting process. It is capable of removing arsenic from ground/surface water contaminated with ~500 ppb arsenic to provide water with arsenic concentration less than 10 ppb (much less than limit of 50ppb set by BIS). The entire process involves following steps: 1) Synthesis of functional cellulosic fabric based adsorbent via one step radiation grafting process. 2) Preparation of cartridge from cellulose fabric. 3) Removal of arsenic anionic species while passing through the purifier containing the cartridge. 4) Regeneration of cartridge by eluting the adsorbed contaminant and reuse the system.
Raw Materials:Â All the raw materials required for preparing the reagents for removal of arsenic are readily available in the market.
Infrastructure:Â The fabrication of arsenic removal cellulose based water purifier requires access to a nearby gamma radiation facility, small laboratory with few common types of equipment, such as Arsenic estimation kits and common glassware.
Manpower:Â One Chemist and one skilled worker would be adequate for the purpose.
