High Coulomb Sparkgap Switch (HCS-500T)
High Coulomb Sparkgap Switch
1 High Coulomb Sparkgap Switch
This refers to recent development of an extremely rugged high-voltage, high-current sparkgap switch that has been indigenously designed and fabricated for large charge transfers applications in high-energy pulsed power systems for e.g. Large Laser-driven Systems, Electromagnetic Launchers, Pulse Forming Networks etc. Reliable performance of this switch in 10-25kV working voltage range has been thoroughly tested in our lab with peak currents up to 500kA and charge transfers over 100 C/pulse. Conventionally in large charge transfer applications, Ignitron is the most widely used switch but it’s very expensive sealed switch with limited shot-life and non-refurbishable. More importantly Ignitrons are only manufactured by M/s RICHARDSON ELECTRONICS LTD., USA and posses import restrictions with monopoly in supply. On contrary to above limitations of Ignitron switches, our newly made triggerable ‘High Coulomb Sparkgap Switch’ is cost effective, refurbishable, can be operated in any physical orientation and utilizes environmental friendly gas for its operation. Hence, it’s a proven import substitute and there’s a great market potential for its sale in India and abroad. Technology transfer of this new product development is therefore hereby requested to a competent Indian industry who may be interested in its regular production with pre-requisite approvals from BARC.
Salient Feature
The HCS-500T is a rugged triggerable sparkgap switch developed for circuit closing and crowbarring application in high energy pulsed power systems. The switch is triggered by injecting a high voltage pulse into the trigger electrode that coaxially resides within one of the main electrode. The surface flashover created by trigger pulse in adjacent gap leads to the initiation of electron avalanche causing breakdown between the two main electrodes. This switch has performed at currents over 500kA and has transferred as much >100 Coulombs in single discharge without any damage or structural failure. Major specifications of switch are summarized as under:
Operating voltage range :10kV – 25kV
Switch Inductance : <200nH
Peak current : 500kA*
Dielectric gas: : N2 or N2:SF6
Charge transfer : 100 C*
Electrode shot-life: : 20k Coulombs**
Advantages
Wide working voltage range
Electrical/ Pressure triggering either can be used as per application requirement
Rugged stainless steel enclosure to ensure safety against structural failure of switch
Easy maintenance and refurbishable
Special copper-tungsten alloy electrodes have been used for longer shot-life
Fabrication is totally indigenous and all materials are available within India
Areas of Application
This switch has been specifically designed for use in high energy pulsed power systems requiring switching/crowbarring of high currents along with large charge transfers in single pulse discharges such as:
Large laser-pumps
Electromagnetic launchers
Electrothermal guns
High energy capacitor banks
Pulse Forming Networks (PFN’s)

Process
High voltage, high current closing switches with large coulomb transfer capability is an important and necessary component of any high energy pulsed power system. The most practical closing switches used in various pulsed power applications till date is Sparkgap due to its simple structure, robustness, easy integration and low maintenance cost. With the similar objective we have designed and developed an extremely rugged triggerable sparkgap switch that is made of stainless steel enclosure to withstand large mechanical stresses developed on outer body during high coulomb discharges. As the performance and reliability of our newly developed switch has been successfully demonstrated to be at par with operational ratings of conventional Ignitrons, it’s a proven import substitute and there’s a great market potential for its sale in India and abroad.
