Brief Description

SCMM is an electro-mechanical coordinate measuring device. The device can measure coordinates of a point as well as that of the approach vector to the point. This device has 5 degrees of freedom (5 Axes). Each joint is mounted with mini incremental encoders to sense the joint angles. The device is supported by an encoder interface, driver software for real time data processing and GUI to log and read the measurements in various modes.

Advantages

The SCMM along with GUI is an indigenously developed, portable, modular, cost effective and user-friendly device as compared to its imported counterparts. Also, no imported substitute equivalent in terms of product size and weight is available. As a standalone, it can be used for reverse engineering applications involving feature (surface and volume) generation from a given object. It can be placed near to the component to do the desired measurement. When the user manually navigates the tool end fixed to the SCMM, he can visualize on the computer screen the actual configuration of the SCMM along with the path traversed by the end tool.


While using SCMM for its application in surgical-registration & surgical-navigation, the procedure eliminates the ‘line of sight’ problem which is a constraint of the current neuronavigation procedures. SCMM based surgical-navigation guides the surgeon how to orient the surgical tool so that it approaches in a straight line path from entry point to the tumor point. The SCMM based frameless stereotaxy system has an accuracy comparable to the frame based stereotaxy system and at the same time patient comfort levels equivalent to the optical tracking based frameless stereotaxy systems. The SCMM based surgical-registration and surgical-navigation is an economical and a promising substitute over the current optical tracking based surgical-navigation systems.
