Mercury Visual Detection Kit for Ground Water (MVDK)

Mercury is considered as one of the most toxic global pollutants because of its highly accumulative (up to 106) and persistent character in the environment and biota. The chief sources of mercury pollution are battery manufacturing units, chlor-alkali plants, amalgams, electrodes, lamps, medical devices, fungicides and pigments. The two predominant pathways for incorporation of mercury in to human body are drinking water and dietary intake. Mercury exposure has adverse effects in heart, brain, kidney, lungs, central nervous system and DNA of human beings and animals. As a safeguard for human health, World Health Organization (WHO) has set a permissible limit of 1 ng mL-1 of mercury in drinking water while US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has set it at 2 ng mL-1. The Mercury Visual Detection Kit For Ground Water (MVDK) is a simple, sensitive and cost effective visual colorimetric testing method useful for the estimation of mercury in ground water suitable for both laboratory and field use. The method is based on formation of a mercury complex that gives concentration dependent coloration.
